INT. SASHA’S CAR – AFTERNOON
SASHA and DIANA get into the car. SASHA starts the ignition, and begins to drive. A music station playing popular songs storms through the car. SASHA turns it down a bit. DIANA looks out the window watching Bell Town go by.
DIANA
You mind if I change to a different station?
SASHA
Right after this song.
DIANA
(Looks out the window)
Does anyone listen to good music anymore?
SASHA
(Turns the radio down a bit)
What?
DIANA
Good music: does anyone listen to it?
SASHA
It depends on what you define as good music.
DIANA
I mean music that seems meaningful. You know, like Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Cab Calloway…you know, those guys.
SASHA
Well, sure they do.
DIANA
Then how come whenever I talk about…say, Buddy Holly to my “intended age group”, no one seems to know?
SASHA
Well…I guess they either never grew up listening to that kind of music, or had never expected to find pleasure in them.
Maybe they want something that’s new and inventive.
DIANA
That may be but how come our music now-a-days sound like crap compared to music back then?
SASHA
I wouldn’t say its complete crap: there are some great songs that have entered into our subconscious.
DIANA
Like what, for example?
SASHA
Let’s see…
(Thinks for a minute)
-That one song by Ceelo Green where he says “Fuck you”?
-“Somebody That I Use To Know” by Gotye.
-A few songs by the band “Fun.”.
-Lady Gaga.
-Kanye West.
DIANA
(Laughs)
Yeah, Kanye “I’m more popular than you” West. There’s a laugh.
SASHA
Hey, other decades had to deal with egotistical people in the music industry too.
John Lennon was a woman beater back in the day, did you know that?
And he even made a statement that the Beatles were “…more popular than Jesus”.
The religious right burned a ton of their albums because of that.
DIANA
Same with Elvis, Buddy Holly, Madonna, Bob Dylan, and so forth.
But the difference between those artist and today’s…the artists of the past had a voice; they gave people inspiration.
With today’s artists, they only care about making a quick buck while stroking their massive egos. That goes with girls too.
SASHA
Kanye claims to be a serious artist. He’s released a few good songs every now and then.
DIANA
Again…massive ego.
SASHA
Have you even listened to any of the new songs?
DIANA
I may have a little. But they’re not my cup of tea.
SASHA
Same could go for other people. Not everyone will like what you like; everyone’s different.
DIANA
(Pause)
Well, I think the general public needs to be aware of what’s out there instead focusing on undeserved talents.
I’m not saying every new artist is bad…I’m saying we should…offer them alternatives, you know?
SASHA
(Smiles)
You’re a real hipster, you know that?
DIANA
And damn proud of it.
SASHA
(Notices her house)
Oh, we’re here!
DIANA
Okay.
SASHA parks the car, and stops the ignition. They both get out of the car.
